EXERCISE FIVE The Integpumentary Sysem 2. The main organ of the integumentary system and discuss their function system is the skin. Name three structures that are associated structures in the integumentary 3. Which one of these three layers (epidermis, dermis, hypodermis) is not considered part of the integument? 4. What specific protein makes the epidermis tough? 5. The most superficial layer of skin (composed of keratinocytes)is dead and pwovides a protective barrier. If these cells were alive at the sarface, horw would that compromise the protective function of the integument? 6. Tanoos consist of ink that is injected into the skin. Do you think the ink is injected into the epidermis or the dermis? What support do you have for your answer? 7. Approximately how long does it take for the epidermis to renew itselr? 8. The dermis has two main layers. Which one is more superficial? 9. What is the most common connective tissuc fiber found in the dermis?

Explanation / Answer

2. The 3 structures associated with the integumentary system are hair, nails and glands.

Hair: Made up of keratin and is important for the protection of the body, plays important role in the regulation of body temperature.

Nails: Made up of keratin and protects fingertips.

Glands: include exocrine glands like sweat, salivary, mammary etc.

3. The hypodermis is not considered as a part of the integumentary system(fat storage beneath the epidermis).

4. Keratin is a protein which makes epidermis tough. (a fibrous protein made up of dead cells).

5. If keratin is made up of live cells then it cannot perform the function of protecting our body or we can say cannot play the role of protective barrier.

6. Tattoos ink is injected into the dermis so that it can stay longer. If we inject ink into the epidermis(outer layer of skin) then it will fade away easily.

7. Epidermis renews itself in six weeks.

8. The dermis has two layers but papillary is the superficial layer.

9. Irregular connective tissue is the most common tissue fibre in the dermis.
