Question
Discussion: In 1-2 well-formulated and coherent paragraphs discuss the findings o the experiment as it relates to neural physiology periods based those the results for your discussion think about: What does the noted differences in response and latency dicate about the stimulation of the nerve? Compare individual nerve conduction results with on the level of stimulus in of the group average. What rationale can you provide for needing to determine the differences between the responses at Threshold and Maximal Threshold Potentials when determining the nerve conduction velocity? Why do you use the difference in latency period between sites and not between the maximal and threshold potentials when determining nerve conduction velocity for your test subjects? Compare individual nerve conduction results with those of the group average. Would you expect a difference in observations in nerve conduction velocity if the test subject's Right ulnar nerve were used as opposed to the Left ulnar nerve that was utilized here? Why, or why not?) Conclusion: What can you conclude about the conduction velocity? Restate hypothesis based on the findings of your experiment as a factual statement. Link to future experiment: what do you think would happen if we don't allow for the subject to recover and remove the stimulator from the ulnar nerve? Relate to the nerve's potential when mechanically compressed that provides a rationale for why one might state that their "foot" has fallen asleep if seated for a prolonged period of time.Explanation / Answer
Ulnar Nerve Conduction Test:
Ulnar nerve is the longest unprotected nerve that runs from neck down to the hands through the joint ulnar collateral ligament. When it is compressed it cause the numbness or tingling sense, called cubital tunnel syndrome. Also this is commonly known as funny bone.
Motor conduction study of ulnar nerve:
Nerve conduction velocity is the speed of the electrical impulse travels along the peripheral nerve. Nerve conduction velocity is measured to test neuropathology. For ulnar nerve it is done to diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome. The conduction velocity can be measured by dividing the distance between two electrode with the time required to reach from starting electrode (where the impulse is given) to the end electrode (where the impulse is received).
What rationale you can provide for needing to determine the differences between the responses at threshold and maximal threshold potentials when determining the nerve conduction velocity?
Threshold potential (TP) is the critical magnitude of membrane potential to which the membrane needs to be depolarized to initiate an action potential. The TP is about -50 to -55 mV for nerves. During the conduction velocity check, the strength of the stimulus determines the respose. The more the strength of the stimulus is the quickly action potential will be generated and the latency period will be less. The response in nerve conduction velocity study will be more prominent if the stimulus is given at maximal threshold value rather than only threshold value.
Why the difference of latency period is used between the sites and not between threshold and maximum threshold potential?
Latency is measured to the onset of the negative peak from baseline on nerve action potential graph. The latency is the time required for electrical impulse to reach from stimulation site to recording site. So to calculate conduction velocity one need this value. That is why latency is measured between the sites and not of the two threshold potentials.
Would you expect any difference in observation of nerve conduction velocity between the test subject's right ulnar and left ulnar nerve?
Generally there is no difference in conduction velocity between right and left ulnar nerve. The length of the nerve is almost same, so the conduction velocity will be the same with negligible difference.
