He has carefully followed the dietary recommendation to help with his condition, In addition , he . has been taking medication as well. One day, while at work, he began to tremble, was somewhat disoriented, and showed signs similar to that of a drunk. One of his colleagues gave him some hard candy, which seemed to help him return to normal functions.

1 Why? Was this a proper action, considering that Pedro is diabetic?

2. what type of MEDICATION he must have been taking?

3..What may have caused Pedro's episode, that day , work meaning the trembling ,disorientation ?

Explanation / Answer

1.yes, it was the proper action. As Pedro was taking medicines along with dietary recommendation, this means he was on oral hypoglycaemics which decreased the blood glucose level and he showed symptoms of hypoglycemia like trembling, disorientation, signs similar to that of drunk because alcohol also leads to hypoglycaemia. so, candy acted the best to normalise him by increasing his blood glucose level.

2. As mentioned above he must've been taking oral hypoglycaemic drugs like metformin, sulfonyl ureas, meglitinide etc.. these drugs are prescribed only to patients who don't respond well to diet, weight reduction and exercise.

3. Due to medication Blood sugar level must have gone below 70mg/dL or less than 3.9mmol/L leading to signs of hypoglycaemia i.e. trembling and disorientation.
