Explanation / Answer

The principal components of the human reproductive system are

(a) Reproductive Organs that are responsible for the production of gametes and hormones. These organs are also called Gonads.

(b) Ducts whose function is to receive and transport gametes.

(c) Organs and other Accessory glands that secrete fluids into the ducts of the reproductive system or into other excretory ducts.

(d) External genitalia which are the perineal structures.

The function of male and female reproductive system is different. In male reproductive system the testes which are the male gonads produce sperm(male gametes) and these testes also secrete sex hormones called androgens. Now these sperms travel through the ducts during emission and mixes with the fluids from accessory glands. This mixture is called semen. During reproduction the male ejaculates semen.

In case of female reproductive system the female gonads called Ovaries release one egg every month. This egg contain female gametes and are called Oocyte. This then travels through ducts known as Fallopian tubes into bag shaped organ known as Uterus. Uterus is connected to the exterior part by passage or pathway . During reproduction the male ejaculates semen which passes through the pathway and enters the female reproductive tract.

Semen contains millions of sperm cells but only one sperm cell is able to fuse with the egg. If it fuses with the egg then the uterus encloses it and this develops into an embryo ultimately growing into a fetus. This fetus is then nurtured upto nine months and it is delivered after nine months of pregnancy.
