Question

Alpha Corp is trying to decide the size of the connection it needs to the Internet. The company estimates that it will send and receive a total of about 1,000 emails per hour and that each email message is about 1,500 bytes in size. The company also estimated that it will send and receive a total of about 3,000 web pages per hour and that each page is about 40,000 bytes in size. 1) without considering transmission efficiency, how large an Internet connection would you recommend in terms of bits per second (assuming that each byte is 8 bits in length)? 2) assuming they use a synchronous data link layer protocol with an efficiency of about 90%, how large an Internet connection would you recommend? 3) suppose Alpha wants to be sure that its Internet connection will provide sufficient capacity the next 2 years. How large an Internet connection would you recommend?

Explanation / Answer

1000 emails per hour of 1500 bytes each = 1.5 * 10^6 bytes per hr

3,000 web pages per hour and that each page is about 40,000 bytes in size = 1.2 * 10 ^8 bytes per hr

1) SO total data user per hr = 1.215 * 10 ^ 9 bytes / hr = 33750 bytes / sec = 33750 * 8 bits per sec

= 270,000 bits per second = 270 kbps

2) If efficiency is 90%

So reqd bandwidth = 270 / 0.90 = 300 kbps

3) For two years...

Data = 300,000 * 3600 * 24 * 365 * 2 = 1.89216 * 10^13 bits of data = 2.3652 * 10^12 bytes
