Use the five-step decision-making process discussed in Chapter 1 to analyze the following situations and recommend a course of action Your firm relies heavily on temporary workers. To minimize potential legal issues, it ensures that the temporary workers are not mistaken about their place within the company. Therefore temporary employment agencies provide these workers with a handbook that lays out the ground rules in explicit detail. Temporary workers are barred from using company-owned athletic fields-for insurance reasons, the handbook explains. Temporary workers are told not to park their cars in the company parking lot because it would create parking problems for regular workers. Temporary workers are also told not to buy goods at the company store, eat in the company cafeteria, or participate in company social clubs such as chess, tai chi, or line dancing, which are open to regular employees. They are not permitted to attend parties given for regular employees, company-sponsored screenings of the latest movies, or company meetings that are often held at the local convention center. In addition, their email addresses must contain an n- prefix to indicate their nonpermanent status in the company Imagine that you are a newly hired manager in the Human Resources Department and that you have been asked to respond to complaints from several temporary workers about working conditions. What sort of complaints would you expect to hear? How would you handle this?Explanation / Answer
Like various other organizations, the organization that I am employed to also banks on the service of temporary workers who have become quite an integral part of the organization but they do not get to experience the facilities enjoyed by the permanent employees and they have a cause of concern regarding the same. As a manager in the HR department I have received a lot of grievances where temporary employees feel deprived and categorized based on the discrimination they receive and it is my duty to resolve their issues so that the organization as a whole is benefitted. The first step in decision making is to state the problem or the goal and the goal here is to create a balance between permanent and temporary employees so that the temporary employees do not feel deprived.
The very next step is gathering information regarding the issue and from the information gathered it is quite visible that their feeling of being deprived is quite valid and justified. The temporary employees have been discriminated from the permanent employees and that too on a huge prospect because they are even not allowed to avail the basic facilities like parking space, cafeteria, company meetings along with other facilities which the permanent employees get to avail but not the temporary employees. Now the next step is to consider the consequences that may lead to depending upon the issue and I believe that this will make the situation of the temporary employees better and I believe that the management may have not felt the magnitude of the issue but as the organization banks on temporary employees more so it is ethical to make the temporary employees feel that they are valued.
Now, I will take the decision to get rid of the discrimination that are visible and present in between the permanent and temporary employees because I believe that they are important equally and they deserve the importance like the permanent employees. The final step in the process is evaluating the decision that I made and I feel that depending upon the performance of the temporary employees along with the number of grievances that I receive I will actually evaluate the decision that I made.
