Question
As the HR director for a medium sized business with 800 employees, you've been asked by the CEO to draft a paternity leave policy. At present, new moms get up to 8 weeks off with pay and an option for another 4 weeks without pay. New dads are informally allowed to take up to a week off. After doing some research, you find that about 85% of new dads take one or two weeks off with the birth of a new baby. But few new dads take more than that, even when it's available because of a variety of worries about their careers and job security.
What is your plan for drafting this new paternity leave policy?
How will you go about getting good information and making sure the new policy is a good fit with your organization and its employees?
What is you plan for making sure new dads take full advantage of the new policy and are not afraid to use it?
Explanation / Answer
This is a very common issue and organizations need to be a bit more considerate regarding such an issue because even the father require leave after a baby is born so the plan is to increase the paternity leave to 3 Weeks as most of them take leaves beyond the 1 week that is in the policy. The 3 weeks will be paid and there will be provision for one more week but that will be without pay.
In order to get information about the new policy I will be conducting a survey regarding the same and random employees will be required to answer a set of questions prepared related to the new policy.
Mass awareness needs to be created about the importance of a father when a baby is born and therefore it is suggested to take full advantage of the new born because even the mother requires assistance and the organizations wants the father to support the family at this time because if the individual is coming to office he may be worried about the situations in home and performance may get affected so it is better to support the family at this time and come back fresh after a period of time.
