Mass society theory is one of the significant theories of mass media. It focuses on the power, that media has in shaping the society’s perceptions and manipulate our actions and behaviors to act in that regard. This theory gives a quite negative focus towards media.
There are some assumptions on which this theory is based:
Mass society theory is documented under the social movement theory. This theory is all about social mobilization and the effects of cultural, social and political manifestations on the society as a whole. In mass society theory, we highlight the effect of political manifestations. As per the theory, politicians who rise to power by playing on people’s emotions and prejudices are skilled in manipulating and deflecting the thought process of overall people in the society. In the early years of the twentieth century, this theory was blamed for encouraging and perpetuating the discontent and alienation of the industrial era. So, the negative connotation of being evil, got associated with mass media.

The growth of mass media has also a positive effect on the society. It has led to mass awareness about the society and things happening round the world. It has also connected all public over matters of social interest. This aspect of mass society theory is often ignored.
