Question

Asking the right questions is an important skill for strategic decision makers. Here are some questions that might be useful:

How can we do that (don’t ask “Why can’t we do that?”)?

How else can we do that? What else could we do?

Will you help me? What else could we do?

Who, what, why, where, when, and how much?

Who will do what and by when?

Would these types of questions be useful in doing an internal analysis? Why or why not? Respond substantively to at least two of your fellow students’ postings

Explanation / Answer

The internal analysis helps the decision makers in the organization to identify the organizational capabilities, competencies and USPs of the organization that can be used to capitalize upon the opportunities created in the external environment. So to pursue a successful internal analysis, above mentioned questions, help the decision makers to not only identify the possibilities of expansion, but also it helps them to ascertain the different course of action and the potential human resource team that will help in business related expansion decisions. Above mentioned questions are the probing questions that can help to answer the following:

1. New ways to develop business and strengthen the market positioning

2. Assembling of the team that will conduct feasibility analysis of the different alternatives

3. The team who can work upon new projects

4. Essential capabilities already available and the capabilities required to be procured

5. The need to align different functions of the organization in one strategic direction

So, above questions (in problem statement) are useful.

The first reply to other posts:

The internal analysis is good for the decision makers with the help of probing questions, but it should be coupled with the SWOT analysis that enhances the findings of the internal analysis. A good SWOT analysis, not only gives a fair evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the organization, but also opportunities and threats being faced by the organization. Here, the strengths and weaknesses are internal and opportunities and threats are external to the organization. So, this analysis not only finds the new ways to advance, but also it helps in eradicating the weaknesses as well as the threats coming from the market. Hence, the organization re-strengthens its positioning and consolidates existing market share in the business environment.

The second reply to the posts:

It is the internal analysis that gives important answers to the decisions makers and leaders. But, these decision makers also require to be change agents. As a change agent, it is the responsibility of the managers and leaders to convince their employees and bring successful change to implement the answers of internal analysis and probing queries. Though, it is not an easy process to bring change and requires managers and leaders to build a favorable environment at the organizational level. It can be done by doing counselling of the employees on one to one basis, conducting negotiation with the employees, holding powerful position in the organization and offering training programs to employees to be compatible after the change management. It will eliminate, fear, anxiety and make a positive attitude among the employees to help management, bring change. So, internal analysis is followed by change management and it needs to be successful to get the benefits of the internal analysis.
