Explanation / Answer
Ans:- Mean of egress is the way to exit from any part of the building to public way. It consist of 3 parts namely way to exit access, exit and way to discharge. Mean of egress is determined by:-
1. Number of stories in a building
2. Exit should be protected by separation from other parts of building
3. Separation should be fire resistant
4. Width and capacity
Fire drills are urgent requirement from safety point of view. Mock drills must be conducted from time to time to make people aware about standard procedure which needs to be followed in case of emergency. The drill should be conducted in following manner:-
1. Fire alarm should be kept on
2. People should be asked to vacate the building in prescribed time
3. People should follow a path while exiting
4. People should not use lift in case of emergency
5. They should gather at assembly point
Location points for fire and escape plans should be calculated from the farthest point away from the means of egress because:-
1. The location point should not have any fire or smoke danger
2. There should be enough space between location point and building form where rescue operation can be done.
The documentation is necessary in the Performance-Based Option of the Life Safety Code for following cases:-
1. If occupancy load is more than 50 people then two exits required as per International building code.
2. If occupany load is more than 500 people than three exit required as per national fire protection association.
If a room is used to hold less than 50 persons, then it is considered a Grade -B type of assembly area.
The determining factor(s) as to the relative danger of the Hazard of Contents are spread of fire, some and gas generation, the potential of explosion which can adversely effect the inhabitants.
