Question

Assume that a memory subsystem consists of main memory with an access time of 133 nanoseconds, and an LI cache with an access time of 9 nanoseconds and 91% hit rate. What is the EAT of the memory subsystem assuming: sequential memory access parallel memory access A memory subsystem has the following characteristics: Main memory access time: 86 nanoseconds Cache access time: 2 nanoseconds Cache hit rate: 81% Secondary storage access time: 6 milliseconds Page fault rate: 7.1% Assuming that all references are sequential, what is the EAT of a memory access?

Explanation / Answer

Part 1

a) Sequential access :

EAT = .91*9 + 142*.09 = 20.97ns

b) Parallel access:

EAT = .91*9 + 133*.09 = 20.16ns

------------------------------------------------------------

Part 2

Since it is sequential access:

EAT = .81*2 + 0.119*88 + 0.071*6090 = 1.62 + 10.472 + 432.9 = 445 ns.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Part 3

EAT = .96*3+ 0.04*.91*9 + 0.04*.09*0.9709*73 + 0.04*.09*.0291*4273 = 2.88 + 0.3276 + 0.2552 + 0.4476 = 3.858 ns
