Question

Excel two line text in a cell

Hi: I am trying to create a template to list 30 keys for the various locks at the library where I work. The template size will be restricted to about 3x6 inches to fit the master key cabinet.

Therefore, I need to enable two lines of text in each cell to contain something like this: "Keypad Backup, Mt'g Rm, East".

"Mt'g Rm, East" to be second line of text in a cell. I did manage to accomplish the second line in a cell, but the spacing between lines is standard and I need to almost have the two lines touching, but not quite.

There will be three columns of ten cells each yet contained in a three inch height, so I must squeeze the lines of text.

At present, I made a Word template with only blank cells and hand printed the designations, which looks rather shabby. Excel text in the designations would sure sharpen the template up.

Any ideas about squeezing text in Excel? I did narrow spacing on the Word document, but that led to other problems with the template such as underlining to separate the 30 designations. Excel has all the lines, but I must squeeze the line spacing.

Thank You

Explanation / Answer

Hi:

This produces a 2.75 by 3 inch grid

1. To get the two lines in a cell, use <ALT> enter to get a line break where you want.

2. Set line height at 21.75 units

3. Font size at 7 (I used Tahoma)

4. Center the text both horizontally and vertically.

5. Put a very light border around all the cells.
