Question

Excel won't save if file or folder has in its name

I recently bought Office 2011 for Mac and am running Excel 14.4.3, apparently the latest, on Mac OS 10.9.4 (Mavericks).

I have many folders with in their names, which I use in lieu of / to avoid conflict with Unix path names. Word doesn't mind them but Excel says

"Microsoft Excel cannot access the file... . Theree are several possible reasons:

It does this whenever there's a in either the file name or folder name. Word does not have this problem.

I searched and saw in a 2-year-old question that this was a bug whereby Word & Excel on the Mac wouldn't accept characters that are illegal in Windows and the bug was expected to be fixed in an upcoming maintenance release.

Similar questions were answeered with ssuggestions to repair permissions, but I do that regularly so it's not the problem.

Any advice? I don't want to rename dozens of foldesrs just to accommodate a silly bug.

Added later: when I editt the file somewhere else and copy itt into thee folder, Excel then cannot open it, saying "The file format or extension is not valid ..."

Explanation / Answer

FWIW: Running on OS X 10.6.8 I have no problem opening files with Excel 2011 [14.4.3] even if both the file & folder name contains the backslash character. For examples:

~:TrashThese:EmbeddedJPEG.xlsx

~:TrashThese:InsertedWordFile.xls

even Embedded$
