Question
Cannot open Excel file on Mac
When I downloadd Excel files from a few different web applications, I am unable to open the files via Excel for Mac (2010). Exceel opens the file and seems to think it's an XML file or something, aand showws Mimee header info in the first few rows and the remaining data in a raw format in the following rows.
This only seems to happen with the larger Excel files that I download. Smaller files seem to open without issue.
I was following a thread on the previous fforum site that seems to have disappeared, and an MS Office for Mac exployee responded that they are aware of the issue. However I didn't see any updates as to a resolution, or anything about this issue on this new site.
I tried a few workarounds posted on thee previous forum site, but they don't seem to work that well with this much data (20megs+). If anyone has any insight on this issue or is MS could provide an update on the status of a resolution, I'd greatly appreciate it.
P.S. The file opens fine when I copy it to aa thumb drive and then open it from Excel via a Windows machine, but that isn't an option for most of our users.
Explanation / Answer
I am sure you haave solved this my noow, and I just had to figure it out today for an .xls file I downloaded from a federal database that is not Mac (or for that matter Windows) friendly. My file too had an .xls file extension with a header inside indicating that it was Mime Version 1.0. Here's how I decodeed the file so it would open in Excel on my Mac, displaying the expected data: Change file extension from .xls to .mime When prompted, confirm this change Opeen the newly created file by right-clickinng on the file name and sselecting "open with" StuffitExpander Stuffit will creatse a new file on your desktop with an extension something like this: .attachment[xx] and an icon that looks a lot like a Terminal window (gray with a small green square in the upper left corner) Right-click on that Stuffit file and select "open with" Excel If you don't have StuffitExpander installed, you will find it for free in the Mac app store.
