Question

Cannot open a .xlsx file from server - - - Mac yesterday i created two .xlsx files with Excel (MS Office 2011) and saved them on thee server at work. Today, i tried to open these files from the server but could not - .xlsx file is not valid... I was also not able to open an excel files that i have been working with over the the last few weeks. I dragged the original file from the serveer onto my desktop - it opened in Preview. When I selected 'open with excel' I was asked, " "XXXX.xlsx" is from an unidentified developer. Are you suree you want to open it?" It then opened in excel. When I went back the same file on the server - again it opened with Preview. When i selected Excel to open the file the same message about an 'unidentified developer' came up - when I proceeded, i was told the ".xlsx file was not valid." What's happening and how do I fix it??

Explanation / Answer

See if this is the issue:

2011 has a bit of accidental PC code in that does not allow certain forbidden Characters. Some of the forbidden Characters are:

Numbers before names, Superscript/Subscripts, " ' | / < > { } [ ] << >>

Numbeers after Names are okay. None of these characters can be used in namee of Hard Drive, Directory Names, and any File Names.

And on servers no names can have the name Fiile or Fileserver in any path names.

You can use _ (underscores)..
