Question

Prompt: Specialist are those who work in the field of policing but with a specific knowledge base in a certain area or "specialty". They can work anything from human trafficking cases to cyber crime. Often, due to one's superior knowledge in one area, they develop an elitist attitude towards their work and others.

Assignment:

What steps could be taken to diminish the amount of elitist mentality specialist sometimes develop.

How would you deal with it once it has occurred in your department?

Explanation / Answer

Specialists play an important role in any department in a business, they are considered as experts in a particular field and considered to have huge knowledge on that particular field. Specialists may generally play the role of consultants and instead of working in a dedicated team, they assist teams throughout the organization with their specialization. Due to expert knowledge in a particular field they may develop a superior attitude and mentality and may start to think that they are the best and without their expert help things will not be achieved. In order to deal with such issues in my department, I will be adopting various steps, like:

1. The message should be made clear that all the team members are equally important and because they are expert in a particular field they will not get any special treatment.

2. There should be mutual respect between the team members and that should be maintained when working in a team or unit, nobody should feel superior.

3. Any act of elitist attitude will not be entertained in the unit or team.

4. Primary objective is to bring business for the organization and that needs to be done.
