Recently you found that Mary has been spending a large part of her workday researching health care and visiting the websites of assisted living centers. You know that Mary's father has been having some health problems. Mary is very concerned about her father and how best to handle his health care issues. But as Mary's supervisor you are concerned because much of her work day is being spent on personal issues. Her work is beginning to suffer. Discussion Questions 1. 1. The major ethical issue in the situation is intruding privacy of an employee. An employer has various restrictions while monitoring an employee and access to emails and internet history may be restricted to an extent.
2. Yes, I would talk to Mary as a friend because I believe that she has a professional and personal responsibility and as her father is sick it is quite obvious that she will be concerned and as a friend I will try to understand her state of mind and sympathize her situation.
3. Yes, I also have a professional duty towards the organization and will try to talk to her about the issues keeping in mind the personal turmoil's she is experiencing and will suggest her to concentrate a bit more on her work as well.
4. No, I will not because I feel that the situation is still under control and such issues are very normal, hence it is better to give her an opportunity.
5. I wont ignore this completely because it is my duty to monitor employees and their performance, but I will hope that she corrects her habits and come back strong in her work.
6. I believe that the best approach in this situation is to give Mary a bit of time and then talk to her about the issue and also let her know that I am employee to and I have my duties and it is better if she can come back strong as soon as possible.
