Question

You are building a large network for XYZ Inc. The network is going to need 10 subnets with 63,000 hosts per subnet. Your ISP is giving you an IP address of 200.123.43.0 with subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 Complete and Subnet the network with the following info; the network subnet mask, the network CIDR and all (Subnet IP, Gateway IP, usable IP Ranges & Broadcast IP). Just list the info for the first 5 subnets. Hint: You will have to use NAT in order to complete the design of this network.

I need all these (network subnet mask, the network CIDR, Subnet IP, Gateway IP, usable IP Ranges & Broadcast IP) listed out for the first 5.

Explanation / Answer

NAT (Network Address Translator):

A network address translator is used to map between a global address and private address. Suppose ISP has allotted a network an IP address along with subnet mask but the network grows day by day. At this point, the hosts which are accessing the internet can be assigned addresses assigned by ISP and the rest of the hosts can be assigned private addresses to communicate within a network.

For this problem, assume that the NAT router has been assigned the address 200.123.43.0/24 by ISP (subnet mask is 24 or 255.255.255.0). Therefore the router is recognized by this address globally to the rest of the internet.

Let us consider the private address of the private network is 172.240.0.0. The number of hosts in this network is 63000 * 10 = 630000. The next number of 630000 which is the power of 2 is 1048576 (220).

Therefore the subnet mask for this private network =32 – log2 1048576 = 32- 20 = 12.

Thus the private address of the NAT router is 172.240.0.1/12.

As each subnet uses 63000 hosts, therefore the number of addresses assigned to each host will be 65536 (216).

The subnet mask of each subnet = 32 – log2 65536 = 32 – 16 = 16.

The starting address of subnet 1 = 172.240.0.2/16 which will be the network address of subnet 1.

The gateway address of subnet 1 is 172.240.0.3/16

The last address of the subnet 1 is 172.240.255.255 (setting last 32 – 16 =16 bit of the address to 1) which will be assigned as the broadcast address of the network.

The addresses used for assigning hosts for subnet 1 ranges from 172.240.0.4/16 to 172.240.255.254/16
