Question
Directions: Read the scenario below and complete the exercise that follows.
Scenario
You are a volunteer at New Horizons Elementary School working on ways to foster innovation and creativity in the classroom. In the past four years, there has been a sharp decline in third-grade math scores on standardized tests, and the school has not been meeting the state standards. Now the school is classified as “poorly performing” and the principal is not sure what to do. All he knows is that the test scores have to improve and he is ready to provide whatever support is necessary to make that happen.
Although you are not a teacher, you are paired up with two third-grade math teachers to help develop a new approach that gets students excited about learning math. Teachers Maria and John have different levels of experience and time spent at the elementary school:
Maria has been teaching at the school for twenty years. In that time, she has not updated her teaching techniques at all and does not use technology in the classroom. Maria’s philosophy is that students need to do math problems silently, on their own.
Jim has been teaching at the school for two years and recently earned a master’s degree in education. He has lived in the community all of his life and actually attended this elementary school as a child. Although he is an advocate for using technology in the classroom, the school does not have funds for the equipment he wants to purchase.
Exercise
Submit a 2-5 minute video message to the Maria and Jim. A quality video response will address all of the questions below and integrate information from the readings and videos with your own personal experiences. Refer back to your notes from the Pre-work as you prepare your thoughts.
