Explanation / Answer
The article has been written Post Mandalay Bay shootings and most of the people in service industries accept two premises:
Impact on industry:
I believe that in short term- there may be privacy concerns. However, the patrons also understands and appreciates the risk and may not feel threatened by increased security checks etc. Over a period of time, better security practices inculding diagnostic security checks will become more subtle and least invasive while at the same time provide heightened security. For example, India faced a terrible attack on 26/11/2008 where two of the prime hotel properties including iconic Taj and Oberois were targetted by terrorists. It resulted in more checking at entrances, use of metal detectors as well as redesigning of entrances so that armed intrusion is made difficult. Of course, it was inconvenient for patrons or customers, however, by and large, people understood that it has been for their own benefits and they willingly adjusted to new changes. Similarly, post Mandlay Bay, US citizens also needs to appreciate that most of the changes will be for their own good, not allowing weapons in their private properties is the first step hotels can take. The other changes can include periodic inspection of rooms where "threat quotient" is higher. Technology has to play an important role in accomplishing that. Human intelligence ( Humint) will come post the confirmation from cameras, sensors etc.
As mentioned above, over a period of time, the security may become more potent and simultaneously less invasive.
