Question
Review the oxidative phosphorylation steps of cellular respiration carefully. Think about the following questions and then answer the question prompt below. What exactly is powering ATP production? What happens if chemiosmosis is disrupted? Where does all the harnessed energy go? Remember the first and second law of thermodynamics.
Investigate what newborn babies, skunk cabbage, hibernating bears, and a banned diet drug called DNP all have in common with regards to cellular respiration. Describe your findings in 6 sentences maximum
Explanation / Answer
DNP or 2, 4-dinitrophenol is a metabolic toxin. It is used to burn fat and thus used to lose weight. The DNP interferes with the coupling of proton gradient to ATP production. This results in reduced production of ATP and the energy is thrown out in the form of heat. DNP also increases appetite.
The skunk cabbage and hibernating bear both produces heat through vigorous cellular respiration to maintain the temperature around them. During hibernation, the fatty acid oxidation is high and carbohydrate oxidation is low.
Thus, the common point with regards to cellular respiration in skunk cabbage, hibernating bears, and ingestion of banned diet drug called DNP is liberation of heat by the organisms.
