Companies are interested in motivating employees: Work hard, be productive, behave ethically—and stay healthy. Health care costs are rising, and employers are finding that unhealthy habits such as smoking or being overweight are costing companies big bucks.

Your company is concerned about the rising health care costs and decides to motivate employees to adopt healthy habits. Therefore, employees are given a year to quit smoking. If they do not quit by then, they are going to lose their jobs. New employees will be given nicotine tests, and the company will avoid hiring new smokers in the future. The company also wants to encourage employees to stay healthy. For this purpose, employees will get cash incentives for weight loss. If they do not meet the weight, cholesterol, and blood pressure standards to be issued by the company, they will be charged extra fees for health insurance.

Is this plan ethical? Why or why not? Can you think of alternative ways to motivate employees to adopt healthy habits?

Yes the plan is ethically since company is giving extra cash to employees in order to meet their expense occurred in weight losing programme. Since health problems is not good for employees and company both. Health problem causes problem in life of employees and at company, example: if and employees is suffering from obesity the person will side effect like high cholesterol and blood pressure and in large cases heart attack also, if a top executive is suffering from obesity and will get heart attack in middle of important presentation it will be humiliating situation for both company and employees and since employees has situation on duty company have to suffer cost of that.

Thus company focus and push more on employees to have healthy habits and healthy lifestyle. Health is important as healthy employee will have less chances of having stress and anxiety due to high blood pressure and unhealthy habits. Fit employee will have more productivity that unit employee.

- Company can opt for fitness challenge during whole year in which every employee will have to take challenge to be fit and details would be recorded at the end of every month and person who have the best figure during whole year would get a huge cash reward and bonus in general meeting so that every other will get motivated for being fit because there is huge money is involved in it as reward.

- Another things is to encourage people to use ladder instead of using lift to commute, as well as in-house gym would do wonder since heavy membership fees for gym will not motivate employee to stay fit.
