Question
It has been said that one is what one eats. In 2016, a federal law was passed requiring labeling on certain food products that contain GMO's. The Department of Agriculture was given two years to write the rules regarding labeling. Some states, with more strict GMO labeling requirements, objected, and many food producers also objected maintaining the GMO's are completely safe. The question for Discussion 5 is should food producers be required to label GMO's under federal laws, under more restrictive state laws, or not at all?
Explanation / Answer
There are different arguments one places pro labelling and against it. In general the people who are pro GMO labelling say that consumer should know what they are eating whereas people against it say that it’s a ploy which just worries people.
In 2016, the GMO disclosure bill was passed and the rules were laid down. People pro the GMO labelling say that the genetically modified food provides little nutrition value and also not considered to be completely safe also people deserve to know what they are eating. It is right both from health and ethics perspective. Genetically engineered crops are based on trial and error method where one tries to get the best possible outcome. Hence it becomes riskier for people and they should know it before buying it.
I believe though it the GM food might be safe for consumption it should definitely be labelled as people have the right to know what they are buying and consuming.
