Question

How do you calculate the following questions below? Pleaseprovide feed back on how calculation is done.

Consider a file system on a disk that has a logical block sizeof 512 bytes and assume that the information about each file (i.e.,the folder) is already in memory and that each pointer requires 16bytes under linked and indexed allocation methods, answer thefollowing questions:

(a)    How many blocks are required forstoring a 98KB file under contiguous, linked, and indexedallocation methods? Note that 1KB is 1024 bytes.

(b)   How many blocks must be read from the diskunder linked allocation when the userwants to access data on the 9857th byte of thatfile?

(c)    How many blocks must be read fromthe disk under indexed allocation whenthe user wants to access data on the 8957th byte of thatfile?

Explanation / Answer

Dear..

           100352 / (512 – 16) = 100352 / 496

                                            = 202.33 or 23 blocks
     c) Under the Indexed condition:

           512 / 16 = 32 pointers per 1 indexed block
           so, 1indexed block and total = 196 + 1

                                                         = 197 blocks

b) Under the Linked allocation:

          9857 /(512 – 16) = 9857 / 496

                                      = 19.87 or 20 blocks.

c)   Under the Indexed allocation:

        1 indexed block + 1data block

         = 2
