Question
Can you tell me which answer is right? I think number one isright. Please show work and how long it takes for the firstand second situation in years. I want to compare my resultswith yours.Suppose we have a problem that currently takes 100,000 hours ofcomputer time
using current technology to solve. Which of the following wouldgive us the solution
first: (1) Replace the algorithm used in the current solution byone that runs twice as fast
and run it on the current technology, or (2) Wait 3 years, assumingMoore’s Law doubles
the performance of a computer every 18 months, and find thesolution using the current
algorithm with the new technology?
Explanation / Answer
0.5 of 100000= 0.5* 100000= 50,000 hours 50000/3600=5.71 years to complete the task but on the other hand if you wait three years then the after18 month computer performance is double and next 18 months it isonce again doubles. 100000*0.5*0.5= 25,000 hours =2.85 years to complet the task if you want to add the factor of 3 years wait time then totaltime spent to get this new algorith is =25000+(8760*3) =25000+26280 =51280 and it is equal to 5.85 years. But dear, it is not the case how much total time is spent tosolve the problem Hope now can you easly find the time spent on one algorithm tosolve the problem If we neglect the 3 years factor then 2 one the best, but ifwe add this factor then the second one is not a better choice forus. but second option gives more quick results if they are testafter 3 years.Related Questions
