Question

For this week's content, we looked specifically at turning E-R Models and Diagrams into relational databases. If you've ever taken a course in database design, the relational database model is usually taught. Some of the most popular database systems follow the relational database model - MS SQL, MySQL, Oracle, MS Access, and so on. However, non-relational databases using NoSQL have started growing in popularity. Companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Netflix, and LinkedIn all use (or have used recently) NoSQL databases. So do a little research on the benefits and drawbacks of NoSQL databases. When should you use them? When would you not want to use them? Think outside the box and think like a systems analyst.

Explanation / Answer

So do a little research on the benefits and drawbacks of NoSQL databases.

The benefits are that organization can store data that is semi-structured and unstructured like Videos, JPEG files, emails, PDFs, logs, twits, and Facebook post that couldn’t be store on a relational data base because its structure is too rigid.

The drawbacks on NoSQL databases is that don’t support JOIN operations.

When should you use them?

When the data we have is not structured, also NoSQL allows us to escalate horizontally easily.

For example for analyzing social media, or on a Big Data project (due to the large amount of information to be process)

When would you not want to use them?

When we don’t want to use SQL as the language for queries.

When the data we have is structured on tables on relational tables
