Question
Research the network architecture and technology of cable modems and xDSL service for providingaccess to the Internet from your home. Describe in detail the technical features of the transmission and
multiplexing schemes used by each of these services. In other words your answer should concentrate
on the transmission and multiplexing used by these systems. You will find a lot of material available
on the web to help you answer this question but please note that your answer should be in your own
words, and that your answer should include proper citations.
Explanation / Answer
Cable Modems and DSL Service use unallocated bandwidth on the existing telephone and television infrastructure. By modulating the network communications onto a higher-frequency carrier in the case of telephone lines, it can keep the lines clear in the 300Hz-3KHz range used for voice. This is known as frequency domain multiplexing (FDM). While the technology is widespread, the specifics of the carrier frequency and the method of modulation varies among implementations. In the case of cable modems, specific channels are set aside for data transfer. This means that frequency domain multiplexing is used to separate network communications from television transmissions on the physical line. Since several users are on the same stretch of cable, time domain multiplexing (TDM) split the usage of the line into several time slots, or quanta. The length of these quanta can be specified per-user by a line administrator to ensure quality of service to priority customers. http://isp1.us/article/how-cable/
