Goggle started out as a simple search engine and over some short years has evolved intoa household name that means information. Microsoft has a brick solid reputationworldwide because of its Windows operating system and Office desktop productivityapplications, which are used by over 500 million people all over the world.Goggle has a very clear mission statement: to organize the world‘s information andmake it universally accessible and useful. Goggle has been very successful in doing this by providing users with the fastest search speeds and a variety of web-based products.Microsoft has built its reputation by the innovation in the Desktop and Windowsoperating systems. Microsoft also has a great mission statement: our mission and valuesare to help people and businesses throughout the world realize their full potential.Today, both of these business giants have a very innovative vision for the future.Goggle is putting all of its efforts into cloud computing where it will offer a toned downversion of Microsoft Office online. It believes that it can provide consumers witheverything at a fraction of the cost as compared to Microsoft. For example, Goggle is providing the Premier edition subscription for their Apps for $50 per user per year,whereas Microsoft can cost approximately $500 per person per year. Microsoft wants toincorporate the internet into the desktop environment as much as possible but at thesame time it wants users to retain their personal computers for a majority of their computing tasks. Microsoft is also now offering more software features and web-basedservices to boost its online presence. This includes Share Point and Microsoft OfficeLive.Both Goggle and Microsoft are growing out of their traditional roles and venturing indifferent projects that will most probably earn lots of revenue for both of thesecompanies. Goggle is no longer just a search engine, and Microsoft is not just a personal computer operating system. Both companies are ready to take the challenge of self-sufficiency head-on, and become the kings of the technical world. 2. Has the Internet taken over the PC desktop as the center of the action? Why orwhy not? The Internet has surpassed the PC as the center of the action in some ways but in other ways it still lags behind. With the increased popularity of cloud computing, many of theapplications that were formerly used only on the PC have moved to the Internet.Conversely, Goggle’s push to compete with Microsoft’s productivity suite and movesuch applications to the cloud has not had the same success. Users are comfortable withthe layout, compatibility, operation and familiarity of Microsoft products and find itdifficult to trust a third party such as Goggle with their personal documents and files.For these reasons, it seems that the desktop will play a major role in computing for some time to come. 3. Why did Microsoft attempt to acquire yahoo? How did it affect its business model? Do you believe this was a good move? Microsoft attempted to acquire yahoo for a few reasons. One was to cover itself in casecloud computing applications such as Goggle apps begin to gain on Microsoft’s marketshare in the productivity applications market and users begin moving away fromdesktop applications and on to web applications. Another reason was to gain marketshare in Goggle’s turf, Internet searches. Finally, Microsoft wanted to prevent Goggleand Yahoo from successfully entering into an advertising venture together, which wouldhave devalued Yahoo for Microsoft.This attempt was a change from Microsoft’s original business model, which reliedheavily on desktop computing. It seems with this attempt that Microsoft is beginning torealize the potential of the Internet and the threat it poses to its business. It seemsMicrosoft has realized that it needs to work with and not against the Internet.This was definitely a good move for Microsoft. More and more applications are movingto the web and with the growing popularity of mobile devices such as smart phones,tablets and other mobiles devices, it makes sense for Microsoft to provide solutions thatcan compete in the new age of computing. 4. What is the significance of Goggle Apps to Goggle’s future success? Goggle Apps is the centerpiece of Goggle’s attempt to gain market share in Microsoft’score business line. It is significant in that Goggle believes that most users do not requirethe advanced features found in Microsoft applications and can do just fine with toneddown version of the same applications on the web. Goggle’s belief is in directcompetition to Microsoft’s belief that the features provided in Microsoft’s most usersneed applications and Goggle Apps do not provide what users are looking for. 5. Would you use Goggle Apps instead of Microsoft Office applications forcomputing tasks? Why or why not? I would not use Goggle Apps instead of Microsoft Office applications for computingtasks because I feel that Microsoft applications are more mature, offer more featuresand I like the idea of being able to store all of my files on my own PC. Furthermore,Microsoft applications are available everywhere and are just as accessible as Goggleapps. 6. Which company and business model do you believe will prevail in this epicstruggle? Justify your answer. I personally believe that both business models will succeed and neither will deliver aknockout punch to the other. Both models are strong in their own respects. Microsoft’suser friendly and ubiquitous applications have been around for a long time and arefamiliar to vast numbers of users. They also allow users to manage their own documentsthe way they want. Goggle’s strength in the search market as well as their tendencies towork with other companies instead of extinguish them will ensure its longevity. Theymay convert some users from each other but in the end both will remain the leaders intheir core services
