Explanation / Answer
While managing project execution as a part of project integration, the most important output is project deliverables. Project deliverables are the products or services that are provided a part of the project. The promised deliverables should be provided as per the committed time should meet the client requirements.
A project may face so many issues while project execution. Some of the issues include less support from senior management or project sponsor, less involvement of customer stakeholders, inexperienced project management, scope not clear, unrealistic project goals, technology changes, poor communication and conflict management system and delayed delivery by the suppliers. It is very important to yield support from the key stakeholders and senior management for the successful execution. There can be many issues during execution and resource related and cost related issues require enough support from project sponsor and senior management. The technological and business changes should be monitored and project should develop necessary control mechanisms to adapt to the changes. Poor conflict management systems affect the project performance. The project execution phase involves a lot of resource effort and expenditure and conflicts should be managed properly without impacting the project performance. The project managers should develop an effective conflict management system through certain norms defined in the contract while project planning. There are five basic modes for handling conflicts and it includes confrontation, compromise, smoothing, forcing, and withdrawal according to the importance of task and relationship between the people having conflict. Withdrawal is the least desirable mode.
Project execution also involves collecting, assessing, and communicating work performance information. Status reports, project dashboard, survey results and course evaluations are used to evaluate the work performance.
There can be many requests for changes during project execution. A good process should be followed for handling these change requests to ensure successful execution.Project manager needs to evaluate the change requests and take necessary steps to implement them during execution.
Project execution is the major stage in project integration and the project deliverables are very important. In my previous project our project execution failed in the first attempt because we failed to produce one of our deliverables. We had to do the necessary changes and it involved financial loss for the client. Hence we should be very careful. Another issue we faced was the conflict among the team members which resulted into poor communication among our team members and we missed to meet one of our deliverables. We can understand the importance of good conflict management system from this scenario. Lack of coordination will lead to many issues and may affect the organization’s reputation.
