Question
Take a close look at the superior-subordinate communication you encounter in the organization you’re involved with or have been involved with in the past. Research the organization you are working with and explore two of the following concepts in your answer. Carefully reflect on these concepts and explain how they are present in your superior-subordinate relationship.
1. Trust – On a scale of 1 (no trust) to 10 (very trusting), how much or how little trust is in your superior-subordinate relationship? Use at least 3 of the 5 categories (behavioral consistency, integrity, sharing and delegating control, communication, demonstration of concern) mentioned (and detailed examples of them) that influence managerial behavior to support your assertion. For example, if you say that “behavioral consistency” is not present in your relationship with your boss, mention a situation to prove this.
2. Immediacy- On a scale of 1 (low immediacy) to 10 (high immediacy) how much or how little immediacy is present in your superior-subordinate relationship? Use at least three of the six ways (values subordinate input, attentive, expresses confidence, personal interest, etc.) mentioned (and detailed examples of them to support your points) in which a superior conveys immediacy to you as a subordinate. For example, if you mention that your superior “shows a personal interest in you”, please give an example or describe how he/she does that.
Explanation / Answer
Based on the interaction with Superiors Following are the rating you need:
1. Trust - 9
When I interact with my manager, he assigns me tasks, authorizes me for taking decisions on my own and delegates the work to me. This way I can say he is very strongly trusting me on the matter of work while when it comes to some of the confidential assignments, the communication comes from him little late so thats why I have given 9 rating. For example, he has authorized me to budgets, handle cash, manage HR Cost center, allocate funds etc. which shows that he has great trust factor for me.
2. Immediacy - I would rate Immediacy at 8.
For my present superior- subordinate relationship, 8 rating is very good rating that I am giving because my manager involves me in every strategic move and asks for the opinion and suggestion. For example, We needed to organize the purchase a machine for milk pasteurization. He involved me into the decision of exploring available options, listened my concerns & suggestion for the suppliers etc. He then almost agreed to inputs given by me and finalized into the purchasing document prepared for final submission as well. This way in all other activities it is very good relationship that we share and good level of Immediacy we maintain.
