Question
Take a close look at the superior-subordinate communication you encounter in the organization you’re involved with or have been involved with in the past. Research the organization you are working with and explore two of the following concepts in your answer. Carefully reflect on these concepts and explain how they are present in your superior-subordinate relationship.
1. Providing & Seeking Feedback - Explore feedback in your superior-subordinate relationship.
Part ONE: Provide one example of a superior giving you negative or positive feedback and the consequences/impact on your performance and the relationship. Did it involve strategic ambiguity?
PART TWO: Then, provide one example of your superior seeking feedback from you. How did that make you feel? Did you provide the feedback your superior was seeking? If not, why not? If so, how did you do it?
Explanation / Answer
Part One:
One example of a superior giving me negative feedback is when my team leader pointed out that cast iron mold making rejects were increasing. I work in a team that makes plastic molded toys. In my team, I am considered to be the key person for making cast iron molds that are used for plastic mold casting. My team leader was correct because that very morning three iron casts had defects because of which they had to be rejected. The impact on my performance was that after the incident, I refused to accept any recycled scrap for mold making. Further, I increased the time taken for pouring melted iron into the molds and the time taken for the setting of molds. There was not strategic ambiguity. After that incident cast iron mold rejects stopped but the time taken for mold making increased.
Part Two:
One incident when my superior was seeking feedback from me was when my team leader asked me for design changes which would speed up the plastic molding process. I pointed out several places in toy design where curves should be replaced with angles. This change will speed up the mold making process and plastic molding process. I provided the feedback based on increasing the speed of production but such angles can make the toys hazardous. My feedback was accurate and I noticed after some time that designs received by our teams had more angles and fewer curves. This speeded up the production process. My feedback was accepted and my superior had acted on it. I felt proud of having provided the feedback.
