Why can't you use a cycle time that is less than any one individual activity's own cycle time?
How can the limitation in your answer to "a." be changed to allow a lower cycle time?
If your answer to "b." would work, what would be the effect of the lower cycle time on the theoretical number of units that you could then produce per time period?

Explanation / Answer
Why can't you use a cycle time that is less than any one individual activity's own cycle time?
Cycle time for a process is the time it takes for that process step to be completed. It is the process time at various workstations in a manufacturing layout. Time which starts from an order and ends when order is delivered to the customer. Individual activity's own cycle time is also a part of total cycle time for e.g. In a process of taking an order in any hotel, the time of order can't be reduced as you can't say so the the customer. The order leads to serving of food which leads to the consumption and finally paying bill. All this is a cycle time from which ordering if takes 1 minute and serving of food taked 10 minutes and then the consumption takes another 20 minutes and finally the payment and exxit process takes another 9 minutes. Total cycle time here is 40 minutes. Now individual activity of taking order lasts for a minute and it is the part of whole process so it can't be taken.
In very simple terms in order to reduce cycle time for a manufacturing process we need to redesign the layout in such a fashion so as to eliminate following things-
1.Unnecessary movement of goods and material
2.Long waiting lines
3.N number of inspection procedures at different levels of production
Unnecessary storage and the WIP can be directly transferred to the next process. The other reason for focusing on the variabilities is because this constitutes approximately 25% of the sales generated as cost to employ them. We need not improve the processes at the workstations as that constitutes very little part of the cycle time and we try to improve the efficiency of the workstations, which actually donot contribute much to the cycle time.
