Question

When you design a system, how its data is stored, optimized, and accessed are among your primary concerns. If your system cannot work efficiently with well-structured data, then your design would not be of much use to your organization.

For this Application, imagine that you are a systems analyst for a bookstore. You are designing a system to sell books, CDs, and DVDs online. Using what you have learned about data management layer design, address the following in a 2- to 3-page paper:

Which object-persistence format is best for this system?

How do the problem-domain classes map to the selected format?

What techniques would best optimize the design’s processing efficiency?

What do you need to consider when you design the data access and manipulation (DAM) classes for the system? Create one DAM class as an example.

Explain each of your recommendations and justify the design choices.

Cite your sources according to APA guidelines.

Explanation / Answer

When designing an application, the major focus must be on the importance of data. This means that the format used for the application design must look at the ease of data storage and data access before deciding the format for the object persistence.

The data management layer in any application design includes the logic for data access as well as data manipulation. It also specified the storage design of the data that is used in the application. Designing the data management layer involves four steps:

1) Select the format in which the data would be stored.

2) Map the objects in the problem to the chosen object persistence format.

3) Optimize the object persistence format so that it best suits the problem at hand.

4) Desig the classes that will be used to access and manipulate the application data.

Possible Object Persistence Formats:

3) Object-relational databases

4) Relational databases

Choosing the appropriate format:

We first need to identify the types of objects in the suggested system. Since it is an online book store, the major chunk of data that needs to be stored is related to the shopping cart. The data would be in the form of text and numbers related to the customers and orders. Therefore, a relational database can easily handle the required data. However, if a customer needs to listen to or view a part of the CD or DVD that he or she intends to order, sample clips can be stored and retrieved using random les.
