14. You are a new human resources manager assigned to your firm's IT organization. One of your responsibilities is to screen résumés for job openings in the organization. You are in the process of reviewing more than 100 résumés you received for a position as a Cisco network specialist. Your goal is to trim the group down to the top five candidates to invite to an in-house interview. About half the résumés are from IT workers with less than three years of experience who claim to have one or more Cisco certifications. There are also a few candidates with over five years of impressive experience but no Cisco certifications listed on their résumés. You were instructed to include only candidates with a Cisco certification in the list of finalists. However, you are concerned about possible résumé inflation and the heavy emphasis on certification versus experience. What would you do?

Explanation / Answer

1.

A large and rapidly growing company like Home Depot which is into retailing needs a lot of data and analysis pertaining to consumer behavior in stores, product placements and inventory management. So while a traditional ERP system can store data and respond to queries, it will not be sufficient for providing large scale analysis of the data and also not suited for predictive analytics used for anticipating consumer behavior and inventory management.

2.

As a responsible human resource manager, I would screen resumes applying my judgment and also select few resumes which I feel are justified in spite of them not having relevant certification. While forwarding these resumes, I will send a memo to the relevant department explaining the reasons for selecting these resumes and request them to consider these candidates while finalizing the shortlisted applicants for further processing.

3.

As a responsible human resource manager, I will get the request vetted by our internal legal team as to whether such hiring as requested by the manager of software development is indeed permitted by law and the possible implications and liabilities for the firm. Only after getting a clean clearance from the legal time will I proceed with any action on the request.
