Question

A project has only four activities: A, B, C, and D. The duration of these activities are: 120, 114, 110, and 128 days, respectively. Activity A and B have no immediate predecessor. They can start as soon as the project starts. Activity C has activity A and B as its immediate predecessors. Activity B is the immediate predecessor of activity D. No work will be done on weekends and federal holidays. The federal holidays are listed on eCourses. If the project starts at the beginning of January 3, 2017, when will activity C start and finish (actual dates)? You must show brief calculation and explanation.

Explanation / Answer

Here's the method to find the start and finish dates of activity C

We need to find the calendar days on which activity C starts and finishes. However, the activity is duration is given in terms of working days, which exclude the weekends (Saturday and Sunday), therefore, first we need to convert the activity duration from working days to calendar days.

We do so by dividing the activity duration by 5, that gives us working weeks. we multiply the quotient by 7 and add the remainder to it. That gives us the activity duration in calendar days. We add to this the number of federal holidays falling within that duration to get the exact number of calendar days that the activity will take.

The list of federal holidays is not provided the question, so we work considering only the weekends.

Duration of activity A in terms of calendar weeks = 120/5 = 24 weeks

Duration of activity A in terms of calendar days = 24*7 = 168 days

______

Duration of activity B in terms of calendar weeks = 114/5 = 224/5 = 22 weeks and 4 days

Duration of activity B in terms of calendar days = 22*7 + 4 = 158 days

______

Duration of activity C in terms of calendar weeks = 110/5 = 22 weeks

Duration of activity C in terms of calendar days = 22*7 = 154 days

______

Duration of activity D in terms of calendar weeks = 128/5 = 253/5 = 25 weeks and 3 days

Duration of activity D in terms of calendar days = 25*7 + 3 = 178 days

______

Activity A completes 168 calendar days from January 3, 2017. So the finish date of activity A is June 19, 2017

Activity B completes 158 calendar days from January 3, 2017. So the finish date of activity B is June 9, 2017

______

A and B are immediate predecessors of Activity C, so it can only start when both A and B are finished. So Start date of activity C is June 20, 2017 and it completes 154 calendar days from start. so its finish date is November 20, 2017

(Note that federal holidays are not considered in these calculations, because list of federal holidays is not given in the question.)
