Question
What determine(s) the speed (or type) of a LAN? What type of cable is being used and what kind of network card is being used. I have a NIC that has a speed of just 100 Mbps, a Switch that has a speed of 1000 Mbps, and a Wire (Cat 5e) that has a speed of 1000 Mbps. What will be the speed of the Network installed using the above? Name three other popular names for Ethernet? What are Layer 2 switch and Layer 3 switches? layer 2 switch is a type of network switch or device that works on the data link layer (OSI Layer 2) and utilizes MAC Address to determineExplanation / Answer
1. Speed of LAN depends on below things
a. Bandwidth of connecting medium
b. Quality of interconnecting devices (e.g: routers, switches, NIC)
c. Congestion in network
2. Speed of the network would be 100 Mbps. Thought the switch and wire can handle much higher speed but as your NIC is capable of handling only 100 Mbps so any traffic beyond 100 Mbps would be slowed down and adjusted to 100 Mbps. So, the maximum speed you can achieve is 100 Mbps.
3. Ethernet is also called as local area network, Thicknet, 100 BASE-T
4. Layer 2 switches are those switching devices which works on layer 2 of OSI layer. where packets are sent to a specific switch port based on destination MAC addresses. Layer 2 devices doesn't deal with IP addresses.
Layer 3 switches are basically those switches whish has routing capability hence works on layer 3 of OSI model.
