Question

A3-stage system has sequential stages with the following times (minutes are how much time it takes to process a unit at the stage. Each product unit needs to go all three stages in the same sequence) Min Average Possib StagesMax Possible Time Time 15 20 12 Time 12 15 12 10 12 Answer the following questions (explain all the answers) a) What is the maximum possible output from this system at steady state? b) What is the minimum possible output from this system at steady state? c) Which stage is the bottleneck in the system? d) Which stage is the CCR in the system?

Explanation / Answer

a) Maximum possible output occurs at Min possible Cycle time.

Minimum possible cycle time of the system is the maximum time out of any stage out of the Min possible times (6,10,12).

Minimum possible Cycle time = 12 minutes

Maximum possible output = (1/Cycle time) = 1/12 per minute or 60/12 per hour = 5 units per hour

b) Minimum possible output occurs at the maximum possible cycle time

Maximum possible cycle time of the system is the maximum time out of any stage out of the Max possible times (15,20,12).

Maximum possible Cycle time = 20 minutes

Minimum possible output = (1/Cycle time) = 1/20 per minute or 60/20 per hour = 3 units per hour

c) Bottleneck is that operation, which has 100% utilization. The operation with maximum time has 100% utulization and therefore is the bottleneck.

Maximum average time is 15 of stage B. Hence bottleneck is B.

d) Capacity Constrained Resource (CCR) is one whose capacity must be planned carefully so that it does not become bottleneck. Stage A and C are CCR.
