Teams at One Smooth Stone

Organizations have been using groups for a long time, but today's workplaces are different. Teams are used in many different ways, and to far greater extent, than in the past. Ideally, people are far more involved, they are better trained, cooperation is higher, and the culture is one of learning as well as producing.

The words group and team often are used interchangeably. Modern managers sometimes use the word teams to the point that it has become a cliché; they talk about teams while skeptics perceive no real teamwork. Thus, making a distinction between groups and teams can be useful. A working group is a collection of people who work in the same area or have been drawn together to undertake a task but do not necessarily come together as a unit and achieve significant performance improvements. A real team is formed of people (usually a small number) with complementary skills who trust one another and are committed to a common purpose, common performance goals, and a common approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable.

Team-based approaches to work have generated excitement. Teams can increase productivity, improve quality, and reduce costs. In this activity, you will see a video about a truly team-based organization, One Smooth Stone. You will be able to recognize and understand a number of the chapter concepts about teams as you watch this organization in action.
