Question
Part D of the Self-Assessment Assignment: Your Mission Statement The purpose of this section of the assignment is for you to write a personal mission statement. Many organizations have corporate mission statements, which are designed to provide direction to an organization and act as an enduring statement of purpose. A mission statement explains the organization's reason for being and answers the question, "What business are we in?" "A personal mission statement is a bit different from a company mission statement, but the fundamental principles are the same. Writing a personal mission statement offers the opportunity to establish what's important and perhaps make a decision to stick to it before we even start a career. Or it enables us to chart a new course when we're at a career crossroads. Stephen Covey (in First Things First) refers to developing a mission statement as ‘connecting with your own unique purpose and the profound satisfaction that comes from fulfilling it.’ " (From: http://www.quintcareers.com/creating_personal_mission_statements.html) Steps to developing your mission statement: Identify past successes in your life: at work, in the community, family, and school. See if there is a common theme throughout these successes and write them down. Identify your core values: go back to the “instrumental” and “terminal” values list and determine which ones are the most important to you. Add other values if they do not appear in the list. Identify the contributions you want to make in your life. How do you want to make a difference? This can be applied to your work, your community, your family, your country, or to the world at large. Identify your goals and priorities in life, both short-term and long-term; write them down. On the basis of the previous steps, write a personal mission statement.
