Your friend is trying to tell you that a router and a switch are basically the same thing, at least as far as setting up a small office / home office network are concerned, and provided you don't count the wireless part. And now he's trying to figure out why the nice Linksys five-port Ethernet switch (model EXZS55W, if that matters) he bought (used, at the flea market) won't let him set up his two laptops, printer and network attached storage device and be able to access the Internet. Your friend is the sort that really does have to see "chapter and verse" on ideas before he'll believe you. Spell it out to him: what really is the difference between the router and the switch, and why can't he just use the switch to do what he wants to?

Difference between Switch and Router

They can't use switch to connect a devices because switch is use to create only network to route the data to different devices which is connect and these devices connected at different port of switch. Switch have multiple port for connection of devices to connected with them

and this switch is not directly connect with internet so if its is not connect with internet then internet will not run on devices so we don't require this switch, at this situation as given in question

But in place of switch first we need router the router can connect with network and conncet with internet or WAN to access the internet and route internet connection or data packet to different devices like laptop, computer and mobile and other devices and then you internet will start running on devices.

After the router we can use switch to connect with router to provide the internet to the devices which is connect to switch after that internet will run and each and every devices

So the router is very important device to connect the internet after connected its send the data packets to each devices which is connect with router.

and in your question they have only switch so they can't run internet through switch instead of switch we also require router. to connect with internet
