Termination: it’s not a friendly term, but employees are fired every day. What would you do if you were the person who is to deliver the bad news to the employee? Termination is not a very friendly word in the corporate sector. It gives an unpleasant feeling to both the employer and employee. This is something which should be handled in such a way that both the parties part ways on a satisfactory note. All the three different aspects legal, psychological and sociological should be kept in mind. It has to be legally correct on both ends. The employee part should be heard i.e his clarification and justification. As the termination of employee impacts the other employee in the organization, and the others joining the organization a smooth transition is must.
1. Strive for objectivity. During the economic time pressure of performance is immense on both the parties. So if a termination decision has to be taken for any staff it has to be totally on the basis of performance rather then personal.
2. Create a bridge to the future. The terminated employee should not be humiliated when he or she is terminated from the organization. His work and effort should be appreciated. This will give a good name for the employer in the market. So the employee should walk out of the company satisfied.
3. Review records and organize paperwork - If an employee is not happy with some justification he can take the legal help to find the answers and clarification which the employer will have to answer in a subsequent manner. So its important for the employer to get all the matter cleared before the employee leaves and get everything in signed, and ensuring the he keeps the organization matters confidential.
4. Recognize lessons learned- A company would think that the employee termination was done smoothly but the employee may not be happy with the that.So it is important to speak to the current working employee in the organization to speak up about the experience and how they felt about it. It prevents the low morale of the existing employee and gives them the sense of security. It also gives them a learning for the future to handle the termination in a proper manner.
If i would have been a person giving the termination would surely keep the above mention points in mind and ensuring smooth transition of the employee.
If i were the employee I would seek all the answers arising in my mind and all the clearification regarding it.
