Question

5. First,   write   down   a   list   of   your   daily   activities   that   you   typically   do   on   a
weekday.   For   instance,   get   out   of   bed,   take   a   shower,   get   dressed,   eat   breakfast
etc.   Make   sure   to   break   down   your   list   so   you   have   a   minimum   of   15   activities.
a) Now   consider   which   of   these   activities   is   already   exploiting   some   form   of
parallelism   (for   instance,   carrying   one   book   at   a   time   to   school,   versus
loading   them   all   into   your   backpack   and   then   carry   them   “in   parallel”).   For
each   of   your   activities,   discuss   if   they   are   already   working   in   parallel,   but   if
not,   why   they   are   not.
b) Next,   consider   which   of   the   activities   could   be   carried   out   concurrently
(e.g.,   eating   breakfast   and   listening   to   the   news).   For   each   of   your   activities,
describe   which   other   activity   could   be   paired   with   this   activity.
c) For   (b),   what   could   we   change   about   current   systems   so   that   we   could
perform   more   tasks   in   parallel?
d) Estimate   how   much   shorter   time   it   would   take   to   carry   out   these   activities
if   you   tried   to   carry   out   as   many   tasks   in   parallel   as   possible.

Explanation / Answer

Solution:

The activities are:

a)

In above-mentioned activities, some activities are exploiting some form of parallelism

like the revision of chapter can be done parallelly with the breakfast of brushing teeth.

Each of the activities cannot be performed in parallel since you cannot meditate while taking shower or having a breakfast.

They are not in a parallel manner because it is not possible to paralyze them.

b)

Brushing the teeth can be paired with preparing backpack or the revision of the chapter

or breakfast can be done with watching the news or preparing backpack.

d)

We can club or pair together the processes which can be performed in parallel

d)

Suppose every activity is taking one unit of time from the 14 given above

after parallelism, they can be performed in

10 unit of time.
