An enterprise information system (EIS) is a system that improves the functions of enterprise
business processes through integration. While providing a single system that is central to the
organization that ensures information can be shared across functional levels and management
hierarchies, an EIS is used at the same time as customer relationships management and supply
chain management to systematize business processes. The overarching benefit of utilizing
enterprise integrated information systems is to improve the functions of enterprise business
processes through the combination of multiple components. In doing this, organizations are
able to offer high quality service and deal with large volumes of data. The diagram listed above
highlights the roles systems play in supporting customers, suppliers, partners, and employees of
a business. Information systems such as those outlined in the above diagram were created to
give employees, customers, partners, and suppliers an easy way to get the critical information
they both needed and wanted, when they wanted it, and the EIS tailored information to the
formats in which each category wanted the information.
The diagram shows the roles in which the employees, customers, partners, and suppliers play in the integrated process of Supply Chain Management, Enterprise Resource Planning, and Customer Relationship Management. While employees focus on knowledge management
through collaboration and decision support, customers are targeted through Customer
Relationship Management through such means as marketing, sales, and service. Through selling
and distribution, the partners are integrated into the system, and the suppliers utilize supply
chain management for sourcing and procurement. All key constituents have an indirect line
drawn to Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP).
