Lawrence Lessig in his book, ‘Codes and Other Laws of Cyberspace’, explains his thought on the regulation of the cyberspace. He also supports the Cyberpaternalistic approach on the subject.

Despite the Cyberlibertarian view that the cyberspace is to be recognized as another world that can’t be regulated by our physical laws, Lessig believes that the digital environment can be regulated through four modalities.

According to Lessig, internet users are influenced by four modalities:
1- Architecture of the network- The physical or technical constraints on activities
2- The market -Economic forces
3- Law- Explicit mandates that can be enforced by the government
4- Norms – social conventions that one often feels compelled to follow

Each modality imposes a sort of sanction limit to what the user can do online, therefore regulating its behavior. The consequences are as follows: the law punishes the user for breaching it, the social norms constrain him through societal sanctions, the market guides behaviour through pricing, and the network’s architecture imposes limits on what he can do.
