Question

Computers will probably never be able to reason in the same way that humans do.However, computers are likely to be able to perform more and more tasks that up until now could only beperformed by humans. The goal of AI is to develop computers that can think, as well as see, hear, walk, talk, and feel.A major thrust of AI is the development of computer functionsnormally associated with human intelligence, such as reasoning, learning, and problem solving.Robotics will continue to be a growth area in artificial intelligence. This technology producesrobot machines with computer intelligence and computer-controlled, humanlike physicalcapabilities.Applications include visual perception, tactility, dexterity, locomotion, andnavigation.Experimentation continues to develop in the field of artificial intelligence, and improvements areongoing. Will a computer ever pass the Turing test – that is the test that has not been passed yet– but we are getting closer.

In business, expert systems are probably the most important application of artificial intelligence, though the use of such systems is still quite limited. In other areas, robotics is widely used inmanufacturing, and natural interface applications are becoming more and more a part ofinformation systems for many different applications. Major areas of AI research anddevelopment include cognitive science, computer science, robotics, fuzzy logic, geneticalgorithms, intelligent agents, neural networks, and natural interface applications.

However, one possible solutioncould deal with the ethical issues of these systems. Are they being used for the good of societyor is the potential for their misuse increasing growing with the more complex developmentstaking place. The design of these systems is both complex and powerful. We must begin to askourselves what is the potential for harm from the use of these systems, and how far will we bewilling to go to use them to supplement the human reasoning process. When speaking of computers being able to think, we are delving into the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the area of computer science that focuses on creating machines that can engage in behaviors that humans consider intelligent. The ability to create intelligent machines has intrigued humans since ancient times, and today with the advent of the computer and over 50 years of research into AI programming techniques, the dream of smart machines is becoming a reality. Researchers have been able to create systems that can mimic human thought, understand speech, beat the best human chessplayer, and countless other feats never before possible. Even the military is applying AI logic to its hi-tech systems.
