Question

Semiconductors design specifications are 950 hrs to 1050 hrs.

Now the Mean life of semiconductor which are produced through the process is 980 hrs and standard deviation (sigma) is 15

Now 980 - 2*sigma = 980-2*15 = 950

So area under the curve below mean in normal probability distribution curve is Approx 34%

And 980+4*15 =1040

So area under the curve above mean in normal probability distribution curve is Approx 50%

Total area covered is 34%+50% = 84%

Hence The probability of failure of semiconductor is 84%,which is not a good percentage and hence the process is not capable of manufacturing semiconductors which meets the design requirement.

So the process should be changed to meet the requirements.

Explanation / Answer

4. A semiconductor is designed to have a life of 1000 +- 50 hours. The manufacturing process produces semiconductors with a mean life of 980 hours and a standard deviation of life of 15 hours. Is the process capable of meeting design specifications? What are your recommendations?
