Question
C Which Of The Following Is Not x laccd.edu/courses/43617/assignments/485398 You have been tasked with determining an effective backup strategy for your workplace. Your supervisor would like to know what storage medium is best for the backed up data. You work for a small business that provides tax/accounting services to individuals and small businesses and it is important that all data is backed up at the end of each business day. You inform your supervisor that he can back up the data to hard disk, optical disk, or cloud storage. He would like more information about each medium, as well as your recommendations about which medium best meets the backup needs of the small business. Use the Word Wide Web and your textbook to research the pros and cons of each of the three mentioned backup media (hard disk, optical disc, and cloud storage). Make a recommendation of which method the small business should use. Prepare a one to two page essay with your findings for each of the three backup media, and your final recommendation. Your essay should provide examples of the pros and cons of each type of media as well as a justification for your final recommendation. You are recommending a backup strategy. The original data is in the workplace computers. Your suggested backup strategy would place the backed up data in another storage medium. Your assignment will be graded as follows: Points 5 Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of hard disk storage. 5 Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of optical disk storage. 5 Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of cloud storage 5 Recommend which storage medium best meets the needs of the small business Support your recommendation with examplesExplanation / Answer
Let us first discuss the advantage and disadvantage of hard disk based upon certain common measurement criteria:
Advantage:
Cost: Cost of a HDD is cheap, as compared to other form of storage devices.
Capacity: A standard HDD now days can store 3TB of data which is quite a good capacity.
Availability: HDD’s are easy to be bought anywhere and also if labled properly can be found out easily when it is required.
Risk: as the HDD is a personal one risk of data theft is low.
Disadvantage:
Size: As each hard comes roughly about 4 inches both sides and weighs 500 Gms each it becomes difficult to store these if the data quantity is huge. This would result in piles of HDD. It has a bulkier form factor.
Durability: It has a fare durability but it is at risk of losing data at the HDD contains magnetic tapes, which is always prone to damage, or flashing data out and data corruption.
Power consumption: It consumes good amount of power to run and store data, so it is not a power efficient way to store data.
Accessibility: Hard to access as there maybe lots of such devices piled up and needs to be retrieved when a data is needed.
The advantage and disadvantage of optical disk are as follows:
Availability: These are too easily available everywhere.
Size: Size of optical disks are much smaller then HDD’s hence easier to store.
Risk: as the optical drive is a personal one risk of data theft is low.
Disadvantage:
Cost: Cost of optical disks such as CD’s or blue ray are cheaper then HDD’s.
But cost per GB is higher as compared to others.
Durability: These are not so durable as if there is any physical damage in it data may be lost or corrupted. It also suffers compatibility issues as it supports only certain formats for writing data into it.
Capacity: It cannot hold enough data in comparison to other devices.
Special devices needed: It requires drives to read and write data into it, which is an additional cost added.
Accessibility: Hard to access as there may be many of such optical drives are stacked up and needs to be retrieved when a data is needed.
The advantage and disadvantage of cloud storage are as follows:
Accessibility: Data can be accessible anywhere any time without any additional burden.
Cost: Cost of infrastructure is almost zero as there is no personal infrastructure as such. Only subscription cost is required. Cost per GB is also significantly less.
Durability: Data can be almost stored inside cloud forever as it has backups created for each data and if one data is lost form a server that data can be retrieved and presented to the user from other backup servers.
Disadvantage:
Need for internet: It requires internet to be accessed, so if the internet is down or interrupted somehow data storage, retrieval, and storage cannot be done.
Risk: risk of data theft is high as all the data is in public cloud and can be accessed by anyone.
Based on the requirements the following features are required for storage of financial data.
Low risk, low data size, durability, accessibility, avilibility, cost.
Based on these I would recommend to go for Hard disks. As it Is personal so data theft can be mitigated.
As data volume is low, due to some account data’s only being stored it can be used easily. Cost is low and avilibility and durability is high wrt. HDD hence this would be the ideal choice.
