Question
Q1) Social dilemmas occur during negotation where a specific alternative might be more profitable to an individual rather than an alternative which is agreed by all the parties based on the negotiation. Below is how group cooperation can be built when social dilemmas are present in a negotation setting -
1. Considering that a decision which is in middle path to each of the parties is much more profitable for the entire group rather than decision which is profitable for a party while unprofitable to another, the group need to come to a collective decision or agreement.
2. An amicable solution helps in building relationship among the parties for future cooperation in case of any issues.
Q2) It is important to avoid going forward with the commitment once it is understood that there would be negative outcomes resulting from it rather than going ahead with it because of the time and effort spent till now or the commitment to complete the same. By conducting an in-depth analysis of costs and benefits at each stage of the commitment, it provides a better picture on future outcomes based on which the decision to continue with it or discontinue in the middle is made.
Below are three examples of escalation of commitment in negotiations -
1. Investing in a loss making startup which has a very low probability of bouncing back.
2. Working towards completion of a project which is incurring high costs without properly estimating the future outcome while just considering the loss that would result in discontinuing.
3.Due to the commitment to the top management, product development team invested money and time in designing and producing a product which is initially considered as path breaking but might end up as disaster in the market.
