Question
William Stallings Sixth Edition Book Exercise (Chapter 2):
A multimedia version of a multivolume reference book is being prepared for storage on compact disc (CD-ROM). Each disc can store about 700 MB (megabytes). The input to each volume consists of 1000 pages of text typed 10 characters to the inch, 6 lines to the inch, on 8.5-by-11-in. paper with 1-in. margins on each side. Each volume also has about 100 pictures, which will be displayed in color at Super VGA resolution (1024 Å~ 768 pixel, 8 b/pixel). Moreover, each volume is enhanced for the CD version with 30 min of audio of teleconferencing quality (16,000
smp/s, 6 b/smp).
a. How many bits are there on a 700-megabyte CD (1 megabyte = 220 bytes)?
b. Without compression and ignoring overhead, how many volumes can be put on one CD?
Explanation / Answer
Hi. Here is your answer!!
Please do upvote if you get it.
Note : There seems some mistake with (1 megabyte = 220 bytes). I corrected it and solved.
Correct -> (1 megabyte = 1024 * 1024 bytes)
a. Totat no of bits = total no of Bytes * 8 Bit;
= (Megabytes on CD) * 8 Bit
= (700 * 1024 * 1024 Bytes) * 8 Bit
=
Bits
b. Computation of no of volumes can be put on CD
i) No of character in 8.5 inch width of paper = 10 characters * (8.5 inches - 2 inches) = 65 characters
No of lines in 11 inch long paper = 6 line * (11 inches-2 inches) = 54 lines
* Note - 2 inches reduced above for margin
Size of text in volume = 1000 Pages * 54 Lines * 65 Character * 8 bits = 28080000 bits
ii) Size of 100 Pictures = 100 * 768 Pixel * 8 bit per pixel = 614400 bits
iii) Size of enhancement for CD Version = 30 min*60 Sec * 1600 smp * 6 bits = 17280000 bits
Total size of volume = (i + ii + iii) = 28080000 + 614400 + 17280000 = 45974400 bits
Therefore,
No of volumes can be put of CD = a / iii = 5872025600 Bits / 45974400 bits = 61,50
i.e aproximate 61 volumes can be store on 1 CD.
