Question

The performance of a network application is influenced by two major network characteristics: the bandwidth of the network (number of bits per second that the network can transport) and the latency (the delay experienced by each bit transported).

Identify the requirements of the following applications in terms of bandwidth and latency, and then give an example of a specific network technology (not media nor LAN, MAN and WAN) that is suitable for each of these applications:

i) File transfers between Melbourne and Japan

ii) Bandwidth intensive interactive gaming using smartphone

iii) Internet connections for remote areas

iv) Connecting a large number of real-time low data transmissions sensors for critical event notification

v) Transferring a large file from local computer to a local server

Explanation / Answer

Bandwidth as said is the number of bits/sec that the network can transport and latency is how much time it takes for the data to transfer from one point to another.

1) File transfers between Melbourne and Japan:

Here Melbourne is in Australia, So the way of transmission ca be done by using WAN which is a Wide Area network. Its used to transmit data between two countries/places which are far away. Latency depends onthe distance between these two places. If it is high the latency would be high and it is low the latency would be low. Bandwidth means maximum throughput, so if the users are increased for the same network and now te bandwidth will automatically decrease, here if there are mor enumber of file transfer between same network, the speed would reduce.

2) Bandwidth intensive interactive gaming using smartphone :

When the player is playing a game online, it would depends on the quality and size the game uses. For example a game takes 10 mb per hour while playing online alone, it takes more than 40-50 mb per hour, if you are playing with others which was intercating with others. Bandwidth should remain same until some one joins the same network.

3) Internet connections for remote areas :

For this its better to have a cable of wires for several 100 kilometers just to reach the remote areas. This can be done by using MAN. As discussed if the distance increases then the latecncy will decrease. Or else one can use Satellite for achieving this.

4) Connecting a large number of real-time low data transmissions sensors for critical event notification :

Whenever we are coonecting large number data transmissions, the bandwidth would decrase as many can transmit te data. At the same time the latency depends on how much distace these points were separated. Generally we can use MAN if the distance is less than 100km.

5) Transferring a large file from local computer to a local server :

Transferring a large file from a computer to a local server generally takes less time and it depends on the bandwidth . Latency wont effect much as we need to transfer to a local server whic we can transmit by LAN. But it depends on the bandwidth of the network it was operated.
